Managing Travel Editor

We're an Amsterdam-based team of 19 (and counting) with 10+ nationalities amongst us – a varied bunch of “Citizens of The World” with a range of cool skills and hundreds of thousands of kilometers under our travel belts. We also have something important in common (other than our very well-worn passports): We want to change the way people travel.

And that's exactly what we're doing, with the travel app to plan, track, and remember trips in a smart and beautiful way. Polarsteps has over 2 million users already, but, for us, this is just the start. You see, there are amazing new features on our roadmap, and we need even more talented & ambitious people to help us on our journey.

So, are you ready for your next adventure?

Managing Travel Editor at Polarsteps

As Managing Travel Editor, you'll lead our rapidly growing team of Travel Editors who are creating our soon-to-be-launched destination guides, the beating heart of our brand-new planning feature. Polarsteps Guides are a collection of the world’s best travel destinations and insider tips — putting the most exciting, glorious, weird, interesting, quirky, adrenaline-filled places and experiences into travelers' hands (and pockets).

Tips are created by our adventure-loving editors, as well as including recommendations from our worldly Polarsteps users. You'll have the opportunity to build and improve this ambitious content ecosystem with us and help shape the future of travel planning!

Our constant innovation is done with a clear aim: to turn Polarsteps into the best travel app out there — which is probably why we've been featured multiple times in the App Store, as well as in Apple’s WWDC keynote speeches in both 2017 and 2018.

All of this, of course, puts a massive smile on our face, but we're nowhere near done (and you could be a part of it).

Your role

Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Tech, and Product, you'll lead our fast-growing editorial team (five and counting!) and will oversee the production of Polarsteps Guides, making sure the quality is top-notch across the board. You'll be heavily involved in the creative and strategic growth of our Guides and will work to continuously improve our way of working.

On a daily basis, you'll set up and lead meetings, keep your team happy & connected, and hire new talent to grow the editorial team. Because we feel it's important for a Managing Travel Editor to be hands-on, you'll also get to be the face of and regularly create your own destination guides in our CMS, from start to finish.

You will be valued for

  • Being a hands-on leader with 3+ years managing experience and strong interpersonal communication skills to tackle any operational challenges;

  • Being a digital native, able to lead a large team to produce successful digital content at scale;

  • Being excited to work in a tech scale-up environment and continuously strive to improve our way of working;

  • Being a team player who knows how to establish team culture and keep a team happy and inspired (both in the office and working remotely);

  • Being an avid independent traveler, seeing travel as a priority and a passion, with a curiosity to continuously discover new places;

  • Your excellent English-language editorial skills, being a skilled editor and deeply in the know of editorial best practices;

  • Having experience innovating and experimenting with digital content formats;

  • Being somewhat of an organisational mastermind, used to keeping many balls in the air;

  • Being able to collaborate closely with our product and tech teams to create an amazing user experience for Polarsteps Guides;

  • Working as part of the Polarsteps team, contributing to a positive and inclusive work environment.

What’s in for you?

  • As well as being part of our amazing journey, we have a couple of other things to offer. You know, perks... the cool stuff. Oh, and yes, that free flight to a random location you've heard about? It's true. Try it out and give our Teleporter a spin here.

  • Travel, family time, relaxing in your garden – whatever you need to recharge your batteries – you'll have 28 days of vacay for all your adventures & desires.

  • We love to spend time together – whether it is during our daily team lunch, Friday drinks (aka Pollo Pollo's*) or our legendary road trips & outings – team Polarsteps is a happy lot that are always up for an adventure.

  • Love biking? Or do you prefer public transport? Either way, our office in downtown Amsterdam is easy to get to, and we will cover your travel costs!

  • The second best thing about an unforgettable journey is the memories of it. That's why you'll have the opportunity to get all your travel memories in the form of beautiful Travel Books – for free :)

Please note:

  • We are, of course, all working from home right now — but once things are back to normal, we'll look to combine busy days in our Amsterdam office with the possibility to work from home a few days each week. Since we will want to see our lovely team's faces in the office most of the time, we are only accepting candidates who live within reasonable traveling distance of Amsterdam or are willing to relocate.

  • We're looking for a managing editor who is willing to work in a full-time capacity (36+ hours a week).

  • For this position, being fluent in English isn't enough — to qualify, you must have an exceptionally high standard of written English.

FINAL DEADLINE for applications: 30th of March 2021.
